Julio says, “Nature has always been my inspiration. Curves, textures, natural movements, and organic forms are the main influences in my wood sculptures. Additionally, since I have always enjoyed modeling the human figure in clay, I have found a way to incorporate both materials into a cohesive work.”

Julio was born and raised in Puerto Rico. He studied Sculpture at the University of Puerto Rico. After the interruption of military service and upon his return from Viet Nam, he joined the workshop of a local sculptor where he explored the human figure.
Díaz later moved to the advertising world, where he quickly advanced from “paste-up” to Art Director. After working for various advertising agencies, he established his own commercial art and advertising business. During those years, he taught sculpture classes at the Art Students League of San Juan, and in his own workshop taught private modeling and casting classes.
In the past 16 years, Julio has discovered indigenous wood as a medium for his sculptural work and local nature as his inspiration. Most recently, he has been complementing wood with male and female figures. His work is currently being shown in Puerto Rico’s oldest Art Gallery and he has frequently participated in group exhibits. His work is part of many local and stateside collections.
